I'm new at this and have just bought 5 acres in KY. Need advice on type/size of tractor to purchase (Leaning towards New Holland). Requirements would be finish mowing, digging post holes and light farm work. Any information, advice or experiences would be appreciated.

i just bought a kubota diesel. it is used and is model l2350. you need a diesel for sure because it has more torque and will do a really good job for you. if you get a 4 wheel drive, you will be glad you did. ....

Before anybody can help you with sizing and type you might need to give further information. I.E. What type of land, open or woods, what do you want to do? mow or brush hog, plow snow or dig ditches, etc. Give as many details as possible and I am sure that someone will be able to help you. ....

i manage about 27 acres, six are grass, 21 are woods, i have a New Holland 1520 with loader, 60" belly mower,rear blade, 5ft brush hog, post hole digger also have a bolens garden tractor.this is a 23hp tractor with 4wd, hydrostatic trans.it works all year round, mowing, moving downed trees,snow plowing , and maintaining the landscaping.we do not plow with it so i cant answer about that.my wife has taken to the tractor and now does a lot ofher own loading, digging with the tractor.the post hole digger is a wonderfull landscaping tool,i have planted 300 trees with it, put in a 15 bush rosegarden,and had the bark mulch spread as a suprise for my wife, took me 90 minutes, did it while she was shopping. ....

George, the nice thing is that it really doesn't matter. All of the top brands are good...even excellent. Tractors are amazingly durable. It will not surprise anyone if you work your tractor for 10 to 20 years without having ANYTHING gowrong! Top brands include: John Deere, NH, Kubota, and Massey Ferguson. Tractorsless well known but probably just as good are Mitsubishi, Cub Cadet, Zetor, andthe grey market Yanmars, Iseki, and doggone it I've probably left out someonesfavorite tractor without meaning to do so. I'm trying to be very general here. Things that everyone agrees on is that JD costs more to buy and you get more onresale..and that none of the top dozen manufacturers makes a really bad tractor. You probably want to go for something in the 20 to 30 HP range with a loader anda back blade. Get shuttle shift (quick reverse) and power steering if you can. Iwould say to get a gear type rather than a hydrodrive if you are going to do mostly heavy loader work or plowing. Otherwise the HST tranny is fine. Oh, be surethat the unit has a "live PTO". I think that you will find that all of the tractors have all of thesefeatures, and that they all work about equally well. So how do you decide on whichone to buy? Even the prices are similar! Be glad....they are made so well and themarket is so competitive that you can't get a bad one. But I'll give you a hint:Go with whichever dealer makes you most comfortable. The dealer is just as important or even more so than the make of tractor. And save a LOT of money forbuying impliments. You will want more of them than you would ever believe. Roger L ....

New Holland is a good choice. I was lucky and picked up a used Ford 1900 with only 450 hours on it and in like new shape. I previously had an old Massey Feguson TO35 which was ok but I wasted a lot of time trying to start it. I am now comepletly sold on diesel engine tractors and would never have gas again. My tractor starts in all weather( the day I first went to see it, it was 6 below zero and it had been sitting in a shed all winter, but a tweak of the plug heater and it started right off) It came with a loader which I used to make a drive and then took off ( loaders are a bit of a problem when not in use so try and get one with a quick hookup) I dont have powersteering and have not missed it as yet. It had fluid filled tires when I got it and I quickly got rid of those suckers. Balance your tractor with weights and keep the tires filled with air. I have been lucky with used tractors and learned that you have to watch out for dealers who sell them. If I had the money I would have bought new but coulnt afford it. John Deere is of course good but overprices on everything, implements etc. Good cheap implements are readily available new and used if you shop around. I have never spent more than 400 dollars for a mower, etc. ....
